What I am presently seeing from my office is RAIN, beautiful rain. When I think of rain I begin to hum, “Rain Drops Falling on My Head”. I think of the BIG rain that occurred during the days of Noah (Genesis 6, 7, 8). Of the time when Elijah prayed that it not rain and it didn’t for three and one half years. And then he prayed that it would rain and the Lord God sent the rain upon the land (I Kings 17:1; 18:1, 2: James 5:17, 18). Because of the lack of rain there was a severe drought in the land and I am sure that it was a delight to the eyes and strengthening to the heart of man when the rains finally came.
Then there is the statement made by our Lord Jesus Christ as recorded in Matthew 5:45, “…For He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” It was in Lystra when Paul had healed a crippled man that the people wanted to worship him and Barnabas as gods that Paul said, among other things, it was God who “gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness (Acts 14:27). Both saints and sinners enjoy the manifold physical blessings from the bountiful hand of grace of our Heavenly Father, the creator and sustainer of life.
In this section of our great country we have experienced a real drought and we have seen what can occur when there is a lack of moisture in the earth. The farmers and cattlemen suffer loss because there are no crops and the cattle have no food. Cities of various sizes have faced a critical shortage of the precious commodity called water because their supplies have dwindled down so drastically. The absence of one of God’s greatest blessings should cause thoughtful people to consider what it would be like if He continued to withhold rain from the earth.
Mankind should realize that we do not have full control over matters in this life and on this earth, the footstool of God Almighty. Rather thoughtful people will be thankful people who give God the honor and praise for all the blessings of life, physical and spiritual. It was the writer James that declared in chapter one and in verse seventeen, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow or turning.
There Shall Be Showers
There shall be showers of blessing
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.
There shall be showers of blessing
Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain.
There shall be showers of blessing
Send them upon us, O Lord!
Grant to us now a refreshing;
Come, and now honor Thy word.
There shall be showers of blessing
O that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call!
There shall be showers of blessing,
If we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
When we let Him have His way.
Showers of blessing, showers of blessing we need;
Mercy drops round us are falling, but for the showers we plead.
